Discussion:
NeXT Nito Owners?
(too old to reply)

Dear comp.sys.next.marketplace!

I'm sorry to see that this place seems rather dead - much like the NeXT
Enthusiasts Scene in general. So I'd like to make one last effort to
find answers to two questions that have intrigued me for years.

1) Is the "NeXT RISC Workstation" real? Is there anybody who has
actually seen one, and knows the spec?

2) How many working NeXT Nitros are there? Randy R. from ChannelU at
some point started a page to document his findings
(http://www.channelu.com/NeXT/Black/Nitro/), but it has not been
updated for almost 5 years! Is there anybody still lurking here who
owns one?

Many greetings,

Werther

Alas yes. NS and OS are, for many people I think, soo awkward to use
in the modern age.

There's been traffic about this from time ot time, I know. Somebody
posted a fairly detailed description of it but I don't remember who. It
should be in the archives.

Now that I can't answer. A few hundred, maybe?

I think those of us who are still NeXTies (I can only speak for myself
(still adminning black slabs and cubes for ox.ac.uk) and a couple of
people I know) tend to have moved onto OS X and hang around in Mac
groups. Check out www.openstep.se for a nice, frequently-updated site,
though.

I'd probably use my own NeXT gear a lot more if some modern UNIX tools
could be built on them - my cube only gets switched on every so often to
check whether the hard disk has seized up or not :-/

- first there was a machine with two 88000
- later there planned a machine with two 88110
- last version from feb. 1993 was a dual PowerPC machine at 50 MHz
(4 prototypes running under a PowerPC compile of NeXTstep 3.3)

- the zero-series consist of 17 units, 12 units are for the trash,
so there must be at least 5 running untis.
